Teaching phonics and rhyming to a child develops their phonological awareness skills. These skills play an important part in becoming a good reader.
But what exactly is phonological awareness?
It is the awareness of the sound structure of words. When children have phonological awareness, they understand that is language is made up of sounds, words, and syllables. This awareness helps children access the written words and develop good reading skills. It also allows the child to manipulate and play with words and sounds.
The first level of phonological awareness is rhyming.
I have… Who has? cards game is a fun way for kids to read, learn and practice various skills. This rhyming words for kids game is the easiest way to make children practice rhyming words is through hands-on games and activities.
Have the children sit in a circle. The child with the start card goes first. The children stand and read their cards. And a chain reaction ensues.
There are 12 sheets with 4 cards printed on each sheet. That makes it 48 cards in all.
You will need to print these sheets and cut them into cards. Print these picture cards on card stock and laminate them for durability.
Please note that I have used only short vowel words for this game.
Before trying this game, it will be a good idea for children to read these phonics words list.
If you think playing the game once will be enough for your little ones, you could not be more wrong. We usually play this game twice or more.
Most times, I play this game along with the children. Trust me, the little ones appreciate that and it increases involvement.
