The phonics words list is a great tool to improve reading and spelling. These phonics word lists show our little readers that words are often related by a pattern, a spelling pattern. Understanding this pattern makes them better at reading and spelling. We have to make our little readers understand that sounds can be represented by multiple spelling patterns. Teaching children the spelling patterns for different sounds is necessary to encode or decode a word. In this post, we shall be covering digraph words.
What are digraphs?
A digraph is two letters that make just one sound.
A consonant digraph is two adjacent consonants that produce one sound.
s and h are two consonants that come together to form a new sound, the /sh/ sound.
I usually tell children that when ‘s’ and ‘h’ come together, they form a new sound, /sh/.
Let’s discuss the digraph words list.
The above digraph words list is for short vowel sh words. This worksheet can also be used by teachers to design sh words worksheets.
I usually have the kids read the digraph words and highlight the sh sound in the words.

c and h are two consonants that come together to form a new sound, the /ch/ sound. It is the sound that a moving train makes (choo-choo). We make this sound when we sneeze (a-choo!). It is a good way to introduce these digraph words to kids.

The digraph ‘th’ makes two sounds, voiced and unvoiced. ‘Th’ is pronounced with voice is certain words like the, this, that, these, their, they, those, then them, feather, brother etc.
For this digraph words pack, we will be covering the more common unvoiced ‘th’ sound which can be found in short vowel words like bath, moth, sloth, froth, thick, thin, theme, cloth, pith etc.

The next is the short vowel nch words list. It’s just the digraph words ch with the ‘n’ sound before it. Since it can be confusing and also there are a sizeable number of -nch words, I decided to cover it separately.
The last is the -tch words list. ‘tch’ is used for short vowel words. When the /ch/ sound is heard right after a short vowel, we write tch. However, the ‘t’ in ‘tch’ is silent. It is an important spelling rule.
