blend words for kindergarten – l-blend and r-blend words

blend words for kindergarten – l-blend and r-blend words

I consider consonant blends to be a very important part of phonics since it introduces the child to bigger words. I am sure you can see the sea change in your child’s reading ability once he/she has grasped the concept of consonant blends. In this post, we shall cover blend words for kindergarten.

Our little learners are reading the l and r blend words quite well now. But have you noticed that they get confused between ‘l’ and ‘r’ quite often?

‘bl’ becomes ‘br’? The child cannot tell the difference between ‘bRed’ and ‘bLed? Now that the child knows both ‘l’ and ‘r’ blends, there is bound to be a confusion between both.

You can find l blend flashcards for reading practice on my website.

Have you noticed when the child cannot tell ‘cLass’ from ‘cRass’? The difference is in the ‘l’ and ‘r’ blend only. Therefore, it is important that they learn to differentiate between them. It is for this reason that I am moving slowly but steadily with consonant blends.

‘fLock’ and ‘fRock’?

It is normal to get confused between these blends initially.

The above three consonant blends l and r worksheets are word sort worksheets for ‘bl and br’, ‘cl and cr’, ‘fl and fr’ blends.

Cut the word tiles and have our little readers read these words and paste them in the correct box. If there is confusion, the child can also highlight the blend with a colored pencil. The ‘bl’ can be highlighted with pink and ‘br’ with yellow. It helps register the sound better and makes the sorting easier for the child.

I have used only short vowel words for these exercises.

This is an interesting picture sort worksheet. Allow the child to color the pictures and tell you what is on the pictures.

The pictures are: broom brush bridge

blocks  blind  blob

clap  cloth  click

crow   cross  crockpot

flamingo   flash   flock

frame   frock   froth

Now, let the child stick the pictures in the correct block based on the sound she hears.

beginning blends sentences worksheet for kindergarten and first grade

The last blend words for kindergarten worksheet is amongst my favorites. It is fun and challenging at the same time and also provides the necessary writing practice for the child.

Basic sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a period (full stop). This worksheet also introduces the child to basic punctuation.

There are pictures and a few jumbled words. Arrange the words to form a meaningful sentence.
